When you attempt to push a cart and nothing happens, you are exerting a force, but by definition you do not work on the cart.
On the other hand, if you push a cart at if moves, you have actually accomplished something in return from yourself. this accomplished something in return from yourself. this accomplishment is defined in physics as work.
The term has an explicit, quantitative and operational definition.
for work to be done, three conditions must be met:
1. there must be a net force acting on the object
2. the object has to move ai a certain distance called the displacement
3. there must be a component of the force in the direction of the motion.
